Wildlife Services \u2013 formerly called \u201cAnimal Damage Control\u201d \u2013 is a federal agency that shoots, traps, and poisons wild animals en-masse at the behest of state governments, agricultural interests, and more…..<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the agency\u2019s website, Wildlife Services \u201cto improve the coexistence of people and wildlife<\/em>\u201d and \u201cstrives to develop and use wildlife damage management strategies that are biologically sound, environmentally safe, and socially acceptable<\/em>\u201c.<\/span><\/p>\n

But earlier this week, Wildlife Services released its\u00a0up-to-date Program Data Report about its nationwide operations in 2019 and, as usual, the numbers are far from \u201csocially acceptable<\/em>\u201c, they\u2019re downright shocking.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s wildlife-killing program killed more than 1.2 million native animals last year<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n

  • 62,002 coyotes<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 24,543 beavers<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 800 bobcats<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 1362 gray foxes<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 1280 red foxes<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 400 black bears<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 302 gray wolves<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
  • 308 cougars<\/span><\/li>\n
  • and many, many more<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Funded with millions of taxpayer dollars, and without modern scientific support, this program uses cruel and often archaic methods to capture and kill wild animals that come between ranchers or farmers and their profits.<\/p>\n

    WildEarth Guardians, a conservation organization based in New Mexico, sued\u00a0Wildlife Services today for operating on decades-old science to support its killing-program in New Mexico, and for violating the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in its failure to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for its activities.<\/p>\n

    Emerging science\u00a0indicates that lethal management, and especially indiscriminate killing of native carnivores, is often ineffective at managing conflict and mitigating economic damage caused by wildlife. Indiscriminate killing can even exacerbate conflict.<\/p>\n
